SANTA FE – Awards will be presented for the first Canstruction® Santa Fe competition near the food court at noon on April 18.
Five local teams built large sculptures completely out of cans of food. This year’s theme was “Welcome to New Mexico”. The sculptures built were: “We Can in Peace,” “Red or Green?,” “Food4Pets,” “NM Can” and “Zozobra Can Do.”
This year’s judges panel included: Daniel Chacon, City Hall reporter for The Santa Fe New Mexican; Paul Weideman, staff writer for Pasatiempo magazine and editor of the Santa Fe Real Estate Guide; and Adrian Gomez, assistant arts editor for the Albuquerque Journal.
Trophies will be presented in the following categories: Structural Ingenuity, Juror’s Favorite, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal and Honorable Mention.
The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite cansculpture on The Food Depot’s website or Canstruction® Santa Fe’s Facebook page until April 24. The People’s Choice award will be announced at noon on April 25. All award announcements will take place at Santa Fe Place.
There is no cost to attend Canstruction® Santa Fe. The sculptures will be “de-canstructed” on April 25, and all food will be donated to The Food Depot. The event is expected to generate more than 7,500 cans of food from the sculptures to help feed hungry Northern New Mexicans.
Canstruction® Santa Fe is sponsored by: Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, Branch Design and Development, Smith’s Food and Drug and Santa Fe Place mall.
Canstruction is brought to you by: AIA Santa Fe, Santa Fe Place and The Food Depot.

The Food Depot is committed to ending hunger in Northern New Mexico. As the food bank for nine Northern New Mexico counties, The Food Depot provides food to more than 145 nonprofit agencies including emergency food pantries, hot meal programs, homeless shelters, youth programs, senior centers, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons. This service enables these agencies to stay focused on their primary missions such as sheltering homeless families, providing hot meals to the homebound and offering life skills development to youth. The food bank distributes an average of 400,000 pounds of food and household products each month, providing more than 500,000 meals to people in need–the most vulnerable of our community–children, seniors, working families and those in ill health.
