JOB TITLE: Development Director (Exempt)
REPORTS TO: Deputy Director
SALARY RANGE: $50,000 to $85,000
SUPERVISES: Events and Outreach Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY: To coordinate The Food Depot’s fundraising, stewardship and organizational development activities in support of its mission and in accordance with approved policies, strategies and plans
Fund Development
Coordinate the planning, conceptualization, implementation and evaluation of The Food Depot’s fundraising efforts
Conduct donor research, qualification and cultivation, and coordinate other fundraising efforts (donor relations, corporate sponsorships, fundraising special events and planned giving) to help sustain The Food Depot’s annual operating needs and accomplish its long-term fundraising goals
Identify prospective donors including individuals, corporations and foundations
Maintain an active prospect portfolio of at least 75 prospects, including individuals, corporations and foundations, tracking moves management in Salesforce
Work with the Executive Director to develop and maintain her portfolio of prospects
Work with the Volunteer Program Manager to identify and cultivate volunteers who are current or prospective donors, or to engage donors as volunteers
Manage The Food Depot’s direct mail program, including evaluating annual results, planning the fiscal year strategy, and review and approval of each mailer
Plan and coordinate donor stewardship activities
Maintain and improve donor databases and systems to: track contributions by project, by donor and by solicitation source; produce timely donor acknowledgements; and create reports as appropriate
Oversee and standardize donor acknowledgement correspondence, updating letters as needed and ensuring appropriate practices that align with The Food Depot’s communication strategies
Work with the chair of the Engagement Committee to execute development projects
Oversee the planning and execution of community outreach opportunities and events that increase engagement, generate prospects, and/or develop revenue for The Food Depot as the supervisor of the Events and Outreach Coordinator
Major Donor Development
Create and execute a stewardship and acknowledgement plan for major donors
Engage major donors through written and verbal communication, meetings, and/or tours
Develop and execute a stewardship and acknowledgement plan specific to businesses/corporations
Analyze donor trends from current and previous fiscal years to monitor growth of the Major Gifts Program
Planned Giving Program
Build and expand the planned giving program
Develop and update necessary assets in partnership with the Community Engagement Coordinator
Develop relationships with the wealth management community to promote the planned giving program
Track and maintain records of known planned gifts, including appropriate stewardship
Monthly Giving Program
Analyze monthly giving and ensure appropriate stewardship activities
Develop and execute a monthly giving program strategy
Set and meet/exceed targets for monthly giving enrollment
Grant Writing Program
Maintain and expand The Food Depot’s current grant writing program
Produce timely, accurate, and compelling grant proposals to recurring and new foundations
Research foundations making unsolicited gifts and pursue for continued/expanded funding
Ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging of grant narrative with organizational communications content
Track and fulfill grant requirements including publicity, recognition activities, and reporting in partnership with the Deputy Director and/or the Community Engagement Coordinator
Meet/exceed revenue targets for grants/foundations as outlined in the FY budget
Requirements of the Position
Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree preferred) in related field (fundraising, communications, marketing, public relations, non-profit management) and at least three years’ relevant experience (fundraising, communications, marketing, public relations, non-profit management)
Previous non-profit experience preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office. Experience with donor databases (Salesforce preferred), desktop publishing (Adobe) and web-based software preferred
Must be a self-starter and well organized
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet established goals and deadlines
Detail-oriented as well as big picture-focused
Must be able to multi-task
Excellent time management skills
Must have access to the Internet/email when not in the headquarters
Must be willing to work some overtime, evenings and weekends
Must be willing to occasionally travel and use personal vehicle as necessary in the performance of work-related activities; travel and mileage expenses will be reimbursed
Must be committed to The Food Depot’s mission and be able to maintain strong, positive, collegial working relationship with staff, Board members, volunteers and partner agencies
Must be willing to contribute to maintaining an ethical, smooth and efficient working environment with staff, Board and others. A sense of humor is appreciated.
