SANTA FE — The 23rd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is Saturday, May 9. Working together with local letter carriers and volunteers, The Food Depot hopes to collect more than 30,000 pounds of food in one day.
The National Association of Letter Carriers organizes the annual food drive, with donations going to the local food bank. In addition to their regular mail delivery, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the country pick up non-perishable food donations.
It’s easy for residents to help: place non-perishable food items near their mailbox the morning of May 9. Please do not donate items that require refrigeration. Letter carriers will pick up the donation and take it back to the Post Office. The donations will be sorted by volunteers, and be taken to The Food Depot for distribution to those in need. Items may also be dropped off directly at the following Post Office locations in Santa Fe: 2071 S. Pacheco St., 120 S. Federal Pl. #101, 564 N. Guadulupe St. (inside the DeVargas Center) and 4250 Cerrillos Rd. (inside Santa Fe Place mall). This is the largest, single day food drive in the country.
All items donated will be distributed in The Food Depot’s service area–nine counties in Northern New Mexico.
The Food Depot is committed to ending hunger in Northern New Mexico. As the food bank for nine Northern New Mexico counties, The Food Depot provides food to more than 145 nonprofit agencies including emergency food pantries, hot meal programs, homeless shelters, youth programs, senior centers, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons. This service enables these agencies to stay focused on their primary missions such as sheltering homeless families, providing hot meals to the homebound and offering life skills development to youth. The food bank distributes an average of 400,000 pounds of food and household products each month, providing more than 500,000 meals to people in need–the most vulnerable of our community–children, seniors, working families and those in ill health.
