Mia Valencia

Student Mia Valencia spent her summer working at The Food Depot as a participant of the New Mexico Commission for the Blind Students in Transition to Employment Program (STEP). Although Mia, who is visually impaired, had a few options of where to work this summer, she chose The Food Depot—and we’re so glad she did!

During her six weeks at The Food Depot, Mia really made her time count. She worked every morning at the warehouse, helping repackage bread, fresh food and pinto beans, as well as assisting with various administrative projects such as editing newsletter content and inventorying office supplies. Her favorite subjects in school are English and poetry, so she even wrote a few poems for The Food Depot to share during Hunger Action Month (stay tuned!).

Aside from feeling good about helping those in need, Mia’s favorite part about working at The Food Depot was interacting with staff and fellow volunteers; “everyone is so nice and polite!” she said. When she wasn’t working at The Food Depot, Mia spent her time doing her favorite activities: drawing, writing, and playing with her many pets, including a Chihuahua named Dasher, two sugar gliders—and soon a ball python!

Mia, thank you for sharing your work ethic, sarcasm and wit with us. We hope you can volunteer again soon!
